US National Debt Reaches New Milestone, Topping $31 Trillion
The U.S. national debt topped $31 trillion for the first time on Monday, a milestone that comes nine months after it first hit $30 trillion. The total public debt outstanding is now just over $31.1 trillion, according to data from the Treasury Department. Debt held by the public, which excludes intragovernmental borrowing, stands at roughly $24.3 trillion. Russia wants secret U.N. vote on move to condemn ‘annexation’ of Ukraine regions
Russia is lobbying for a secret ballot instead of a public vote when the 193-member U.N. General Assembly next week considers whether to condemn Moscow’s move to annex four partially occupied regions in Ukraine after staging what it called referendums. Ukraine and allies have denounced the votes in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia as illegal and coercive. A Western-drafted U.N. General Assembly resolution would condemn Russia’s “illegal so-called referenda” and the “attempted illegal annexation” of the areas where voting occurred.

Hong Kong shares soar 5%, leading Asian market gains
Hong Kong’s share benchmark soared more than 5% on Wednesday as Asian shares tracked gains on Wall Street. New Zealand’s share benchmark rose 0.7% after its central bank hiked its benchmark interest rate to 3.5%, saying inflation remained too high and labor scarce. The half-point rate hike was the fifth in a row made by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand since February.

Why Shares of Annaly and AGNC Were Falling Today
Two of the most prominent mortgage real estate investment trusts (REITs), Annaly Capital Management (NYSE: NLY) and AGNC Investment (NASDAQ: AGNC), were down sharply during trading on Wednesday. Annaly Capital was down as much as 9% on the day at around noon ET, while AGNC fell as far as 9.7% on the day at around the same time. As both Annaly Capital and AGNC Investment are mortgage REITs, they were each negatively affected by the latest news from the housing industry.
